Class Add, Drop and Withdrawal

Course add, drop and withdrawal deadlines are based upon the respective course part-of-term. For short and special part-of-terms courses, please refer to the Short Term Course Calendar for deadlines.

Please note: There is no refund for course(s) withdrawn after the respective course(s) drop deadline. Tuition and fees are charged at 100%.

After your initial registration, you may need to add, drop or withdraw from a class. Generally, all of those actions can be completed in Ursa and each item has potential implications for financial aid, tuition and your transcript.  If you're thinking about any of these adjustments, remember to watch the deadlines!

  • Adding a Class

    Full-Semester Classes

Through the 5th day of the semester: You may add full-semester classes through Ursa. Tuition and fees are adjusted accordingly.

Days 6-10 of the semester: Instructors may, at their discretion, authorize you to add their class. You’ll need to submit the Course Late Add Request Form (requires your instructor’s signature) to the Registrar, and they will register you for the course if approved.

Note: this form will only be available days 6 - 10 of the late add period.

After day 10 of the semester: You must submit a Petition to Late Add a Course (along with all signatures) to the Registrar for consideration along with a written statement describing the circumstances that kept you from adhering to the deadline. This petition will only be approved if there were extenuating circumstances beyond your control that kept you from adhering to the published deadlines. You must have been attending on or before the drop deadline to be considered. The Registrar has the final approval/denial of the course(s).

Forms may be faxed to 970-351-1870, scanned and emailed to registrar@papyrus-shop.com, or brought to the Office of the Registrar in Campus Commons 2120.

In order to use a COF stipend for that course, you must be registered for a course before the drop deadline for that course. There may be legitimate administrative reasons that may allow COF eligibility. UNC will adhere to the Colorado Department of Higher Education College Opportunity Fund guidelines.

  • Dropping a Class

    info Did you know . . .

Dropping a class and withdrawing from a class are two very different things. If you drop a class before the drop deadline, the class won’t appear on your transcript and you won’t be charged any tuition or fees. There’s no impact on your GPA.

If you miss the drop deadline you’ll need to withdraw from the class via Ursa.  In this case, the class will appear on your transcript with a “W” grade and won’t affect your GPA. You will be charged tuition and fees, and it may affect your financial aid award.

For a complete withdrawal from UNC, see the section on  Withdrawing From All Classes.

If you want to drop a full-semester class

You may drop classes in Ursa through the 10th day of the semester.

If you want to drop a short course

You may drop short courses in Ursa through the drop deadline of the course. Please see the short-course calendar for specific deadlines (select the term your class is in, then whether you’d like to view the dates and deadlines in a spreadsheet or PDF, and select “Run” to view). Note: It’s your responsibility to know when the drop deadlines for your classes are.

If you registered, but don’t attend your class

In some cases, instructors will drop you from a class if you don’t attend the first two hours. However, it’s your responsibility to follow the drop procedure and not assume your instructor will drop you automatically.

For additional information, please visit the University catalog

If you have a hold on your account

If you have a hold on your account that prevents you from dropping or withdrawing, you must contact the Registrar’s office no later than 5 p.m. on the day of the deadline.

  • Withdrawing from a Class

You will need to withdraw from the class  if you miss the drop deadline and need to get out of a class.

Classes from which you’ve withdrawn will appear on your transcript with a “W” grade and won’t affect your GPA, however, you will be charged tuition and fees, and your financial aid award may be affected.

For a complete withdrawal from UNC, see the section on  Withdrawing From All Classes.

    Full-Semester Classes

You may withdraw from individual classes in Ursa through the individual class withdrawal deadline.

You will still be charged tuition and fees.

    Short Courses

You may withdraw from classes that don’t meet through the entire semester in Ursa through the Individual Withdrawal deadline for that course (see the short-course calendar for specific deadlines). It is your responsibility to know the withdrawal deadlines for your classes.

No adjustments will be made to your tuition.

  • Course Audit

When students audit a course, there is no need to complete assignments or exams, but students are expected to attend class. If students don’t attend class they may be removed from the roster. If students successfully complete the class, they will be given a grade of "NC" (no credit). Tuition and fees are charged for audited courses and the course is not eligible for the COF stipend. Current students registered for an audit course should contact the Office of the Registrar to change their registration status to an audit. Students may not change the status for any course, including audit courses, after the add deadline for a given term. For visiting students, please contact the Registrar's Office at 970-351-4UNC (4862).

If you are age 65 or older and wish to audit a course, you may do so with no tuition charge (course fees may apply). You must contact the Office of the Registrar so that we can make an adjustment to your registration.

Registration may occur beginning the first Monday following the last day of pre-registration for UNC students. Registration is subject to space availability. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact the Office of the Registrar at 970-351-4UNC (4862).

  •  Registration Appeals

    Registration Appeals

The course drop and withdrawal deadlines are strictly enforced. Exceptions are made only when there were extenuating circumstances beyond your control that kept you from adhering to the deadlines.
